A total of 92 lake sailors from the cantons of Ibarra, Cotacachi, and Otavalo completed the training program called "Safety on Board for Lake Vessels," which began in July of this year. The program aims to professionalize them for providing services on the lakes and lagoons of the province of Imbabura. This process was carried out in coordination between the Ministry of Tourism, the Ecuadorian Navy, and the Decentralized Autonomous Government (GAD) of the Municipality of Otavalo.
The sailors' training consisted of six modules, covering crucial topics to ensure safety and efficiency in lake service, such as first aid, survival techniques, boat handling, social responsibility, outboard motors, and preventive engine maintenance.
At the closing event of the training, which took place at the Chicapán dock in the Otavalo canton, 84 Lake Sailor licenses were also awarded, certifying their ability to perform effectively and responsibly in the country's various lagoons. Three Operational Boat Licenses were also awarded for vessels operating in the Cuicocha lagoon in the Cotacachi canton.
Tourism Minister Niels Olsen stated that this training for lake sailors represents a step forward for the province of Imbabura and an inspiring example for all of Ecuador. This initiative not only strengthens safety in inland waters, but also boosts economic growth and the well-being of local communities linked to this activity.", said.
The Ministry of Tourism, the Ecuadorian Navy, and the Otavalo Municipal Government (GAD) reaffirm their commitment to promoting safe and sustainable tourism in our country's natural resources.
