PRESS RELEASE: Access to the crater and caldera of the Guagua Pichincha Volcano remains prohibited.

The Risk Management Secretariat and the Ministry of Tourism remind citizens and tourism service providers that all activities within the crater and caldera of the Guagua Pichincha Volcano are prohibited.

This includes descending into the crater, visiting fumaroles, hot springs, hiking, climbing, mountaineering, or similar activities. Although the level of internal and surface activity of the Guagua Pichincha volcano is currently low, there is a high risk of the following occurring within the crater and caldera:

  • Phreatic explosions (water vapor) – without warning – with the possibility of burns and the projection of volcanic rocks of different sizes at high speeds.

  • Sudden release of toxic volcanic gases in concentrations that can affect human health.

  • Removal of unstable volcanic rocks from inside the crater and caldera due to the effect of wind and the steep slope.

It is not possible to predict when any of these risks will occur.

The Ministry of Tourism and the Secretariat of Risk Management are committed to your safety.
