Oyacachi received recognition as Best Tourism Village from the World Tourism Organization

The cultural and natural wealth, commitment to sustainability, and appreciation of rural tourism have led to the Oyacachi parish, located in the El Chaco canton, Napo province, being recognized as one of the Best Tourism Villages. This recognition was granted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and presented this Wednesday to local authorities and citizens by the Ministry of Tourism.

Oyacachi entered the list of the best towns where you can experience tourism close to the people, being a destination selected from among almost 260 candidates from more than 60 countries, which becomes a clear demonstration of its outstanding values and actions towards rural tourism." said Tourism Minister Niels Olsen during the presentation of the award to Germán Aigaje, president of the Oyacachi Kichwa Community, who accepted it on behalf of the entire population.

Aigaje noted that this recognition demonstrates to the country and the world that Oyacachi is a united and organized community that plans its development, and that its potential lies within its residents. Here in Oyacachi, sustainable tourism is a reality as a tool for conservation and development of the population. Rural and community tourism is experienced, taking advantage of spaces and resources with the future generations of community members who inhabit this region of Ecuador in mind.”, he assured.

Among the representative aspects of this destination, located in the intermediary zone between the Andes and the Amazon, is its natural and cultural heritage, showcased through ancestral knowledge and the worldview of the community's residents. Its utilitarian crafts, primarily cabinetmaking, are appreciated for their carvings, pyrography, and paintings depicting the biodiversity of the area. The vast majority of these are made from alder wood. This species has a conservation and management plan.

Another important element of the parish are its natural attractions, represented by the hot springs and mineral waters, where the moorland and cloud forest converge in the foothills of the area. You can also visit the ruins and the on-site museum of the ancient town of Maucallacta, which settled in this area and whose buildings are still visible.

With recognition as a Best Tourism Village, Oyacachi, in addition to being part of the BTV Network, becomes a space for the exchange of experiences, best practices, learnings, and opportunities for all members of its community, through the showcase of its offerings at the national and international levels.
